چکیده

The Avilés Canyon System (ACS) is located at the Southern Bay of Biscay (Northern Spain, Cantabrian Sea). ACS occupies a total 339.026 ha and composed three canyons, reaching abyssal plain 4700 m depth. Water masses that mix in area form gyres upwelling contribute to increasing nutrients different depths, which makes it an important place for settlement benthic communities. They have been declared Site Community Importance (SCI: C ESZZ12003) within Natura 2000 Network recognized as Vulnerable Marine Ecosystem where Echinoderms play role these communities habitats. present study tries inventory review asteroid fauna collected during INDEMARES project compare new findings with previous studies Official Spanish Checklist (IEEM: “Inventario Español de Especies Marinas”, 2017, 2020) update our knowledge on diversity distribution asteroid's species. During surveys carried out LIFE + INDEMARES-Avilés (2010–2012) 445 specimens, belonging 25 Asteroids species, were from 36 stations depth range between 266 1476 m. most frequent species Nymphaster arenatus (Perrier, 1881) (30.55%) Henricia caudani (Koehler, 1895) (25%). After public datasets, two should be considered records waters: Radiaster tizardi (Sladen, 1882) sexradiata 1881), 4 expand their bathymetric range: Novodinia pandina 1889), H. , Myxaster perrieri Koehler, 1895. • New about sea-stars Aviles (Biscay Bay). Trophic ecology of deep-sea Asteroidea (Echinodermata) from eastern Canada

Asteroids (sea stars) can be important predators in benthic communities and are often present in ecologically important and vulnerable deep-sea coral and sponge habitats. However, explicit studies on the trophic ecology of deep-sea asteroids are rare. We investigated the diets of seven species of deep-sea asteroid from the bathyal zone of Newfoundland and Labrador, eastern Canada. A multifacete...

The first report of Asterodiscides fourmanoiri (Echinodermata: Asteroidea) from the North Coast of Oman Sea, Iran

Echinoderms with around 7,000 species can be found at all depths of the marine ecosystems. Body shape is radially symmetrical, covered by calcareous plates and five body parts are around a central axis. The class of Asteroidea (also known as starfish or sea star) is one of the most diverse groups within the phylum Echinodermata, including nearly 1900 extant species grouped into 36 families, and...

Taxonomic guide and historical review of starfishes in northeastern Brazil (Echinodermata, Asteroidea)

Presently more than 1900 species of sea stars are recognized, of which 77 are recorded for the coast of Brazil. Although the first starfish record in Brazil was published 363 years ago, our knowledge of this fauna remains unsatisfactory from a systematic and ecological point of view, particularly in the north and northeastern regions of the country. This study provides the first annotated list ...

Feeding ecology of deep-sea seastars (Echinodermata: Asteroidea): a pigment biomarker approach

Resource partitioning and utilisation of phytodetritus by the abyssal mud-ingesting seastars Styracaster chuni and Hyphalaster inermis were investigated using pigment biomarker analysis. The chlorophyll and carotenoid pigment composition of the stomach content was examined using high-pressure liquid chromatography. No significant differences were observed between the composition of pigments in ...
